Disruptive Brainstorming

One of the most powerful brainstorming sessions I have attended was for one of the ministries in which I serve on the board of a small seminary. It was a session a few hours in length, where we all agreed to simply ask questions—and not just any questions, disruptive ones.

If you want to invigorate your team or your organization, I encourage you to do some disruptive brainstorming every once in a while. Gather your team with this goal in mind: “Let’s spend a few hours to ask questions and offer ideas that are disruptive. Anything goes.” Give the participants some examples. For this to work, you have to insist that no one discusses the “how” or  shoots down ideas.

The session I reference went like this. We all gathered around a conference table with a large white pad that everyone could see and one person designated to write down ideas that everyone shared. We asked questions like: Why do we exist? Do we offer anything unique? Why are we only in this location? From this session, great initiatives were born. Some questions, we were able to answer. Others, we agreed to research.

I hope you frequently give your people space to ask big questions that could be scary to think about but also have the potential to invigorate your organization.

How can I support you more as a Christian leader and entrepreneur?
