As a Christian leader, do you ever wonder whether your “good” people-honoring ways of leadership are as effective as a harsh, quasi deceitful approach? Never doubt that being good wins.

Niccolò Machiavelli, the Italian Renaissance political philosopher, is famous for the malevolent advice he gave to princes and rulers in his book, The Prince. Here are two principles he offers that we should neither follow nor envy. “Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception.” And another, “Politics has no relation to morals.” Ouch.

I believe it pays to be good. First, and most importantly, the reason we must be good, is because it is the right thing to do according to God’s law. There is another, more pragmatic, reason, too. Leadership is a multi-round match. If we operate from principles of cunning and playing games, if we treat people badly and practice deception, we may win a round or two, but it won’t be long before people come to know our character, and then they will no longer want to come along to follow us, partner with us, or even be in our camp.

And remember, to be good is not to be weak or naïve. So, be good, wise, and savvy.

How can I support you more as a Christian leader and entrepreneur?
