Servant Leadership Is Not Enough

It is in vogue for leaders to say they ascribe to the ethos of servant leadership. As a Christian leader, beware, we are called to a higher standard. The tenants of servant leadership are beautiful; they are even Biblical. Still, for leaders and entrepreneurs who follow Christ, something is missing.

What are the general principles of servant leadership? They could be summarized by these four tenants. A servant leader is one who:

  • Prioritizes the needs of others over their own.
  • Demonstrates empathy and compassion toward their team members.
  • Listens actively to the hearts of their people.
  • Walks humbly among their people and learns and grows.

We can add a multitude of qualities which countless academic studies have described. So, what is missing?

God. Christ. The Holy Spirit. Servant leadership may be a component of Christian leadership, but it must not be its heart. The heart of Christian leadership must be God Himself. We must be guided by God and the Holy Spirit.

Is it good to treat people well? Yes, it is Biblical. However, the most important aspect of our leadership as Christians is God. He must be at the center. He must be up front walking before us.

How can I support you more as a Christian leader and entrepreneur?
