British writer and playwright G. K. Chesterton said, “I owe my success to having listened respectfully to the very best advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite.”
In the same vein, my mentor, Pastor Peter Rahme, said: “Don’t let someone else’s inability to see clearly what’s ahead of you dictate the vision for you.”
The message is not that we should refuse to seek, listen to, or deeply consider the opinion of others, especially those that oppose ours. As a matter of fact, it is in this very feedback that we often discover what is holding us back.
These principles teach us that after we consider opposing opinions, with humility and due diligence, we should exercise confidence in making our own decisions based on what we see, feel, and have peace about.
