A few years ago I was visiting Bishop George Gishana, a wonderful church leader and founder and senior pastor of the notable Deliverance Church in Eldoret, Kenya. His son David, a superb leader and partner, gave me a tour of the bishop’s office, which is full of books. David told me, “Books give my dad life and oxygen.” I wrote down his statement and often refer to it as a challenge to myself to always be aware of and engage in the activities that give me life and oxygen.
The most capable leaders are not necessarily the most hard working, rather they are leaders who remain filled. Healthy leaders manage their time and energy with intention and precision to make sure they are not just well and rested, but also filled to the brim mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Every time I met with Bishop George, he had energy, presence, and a big smile to greet and bless others. A beautiful attitude does not exist in a vacuum. It comes from a life well-lived and focused, a life built on a foundation of activity that fills our spirit and nourishes our soul.
What are the activities that give you life and oxygen? Spend time to discover what these are and create a plan to give them priority in your daily agenda.
