The Power of a Generous Mindset

All leaders are connected to money somehow. Most want to make it, save it, use it, protect it, grow it. I’d like to share a few thoughts on giving it.

To position yourself to give your hard-earned money, consider this. As Christ-followers, all that we have and all that we are comes from the Lord. From this basis, we acknowledge that our money must be directed according to God’s command that we seek first His kingdom1. His kingship is paramount. In truth, all of our money is His.

Therefore, the right thing to do is live with a generous mindset because:

  1. Generosity honors the Lord and is commanded by the Him2.
  2. Life is short and we should seek to make an impact for His Kingdom in the time we have.
  3. You will receive so much more in return for giving freely.

Some say they cannot give because they don’t make enough. This is not true. I saw how my father, who went to be with the Lord in 2003, never had much money, but any time he had extra money, he would give it to someone in need. Last Christmas, Joanne and I gave $200 as a thank you gesture to a nice gentleman who helped us with handiwork around the house. We know that he barely makes it financially. He told me that after he got the $200, he saw a homeless man and gave him $50. While, many times wealthy individuals do not give much at all.

I have seen first hand the difference between a scarcity mindset versus a generous mindset. Those who have a generous mindset seem to be happier and have more. I have found in my life that living in generosity returns to me so much more than holding on to money ever has.

How much do you give? To whom? And when? These are questions you must answer for yourself. You must grow in faith and wisdom to answer them best. However, whether it is your money, time, or resources, remember this: When you live a life of giving, you add beauty and blessing to your own life.

Let Us Retire the Term “Soft Skills”

I must admit that I get a little bristled when I hear someone refer dismissively to leadership as a soft skill. I believe there is a misconception, an assumption that soft skills are secondary, weak, or less essential than technical
