Summing Up Marketing in Four Words

Marketing success can be summarized in these four words: Winning hearts and minds.

Continuing from yesterday’s article, this advice from a marketing executive really struck home.

Winning hearts and minds hit home with me because these four words perfectly depict how I feel about leadership. I shared an illustration yesterday detailing how the phrase describes my view of the journey of leadership. But marketing?

Marketing so often comes across as smartly showcasing your product or service loudly by screaming, dancing, and hollering, “Look at us! Here we are!” Then jumping around and shouting some more, “This is what we do!”

Enough shouting. While shouting, showcasing, and presenting ourselves to the world may garner customers and clients, truly successful marketing happens, just as in leadership, when people fall in love with you, your mission, your organization, and your product or service. That’s when suddenly, in both leadership and marketing, the mission, vision, and organization become theirs.

As you think about promoting your organization, ministry, or business, keep in mind that people on the outside have hearts and minds that must be won. How do you win their hearts? This is the question we must answer as leaders. If leadership is winning the hearts and minds of the people in business with you to come alongside you and labor together with you, then marketing is winning the hearts and minds of people on the outside to come and receive what you have to offer, to partake, and partner with your brand.

How do you win the hearts and minds of people with marketing? Just as I advise in leadership, become a person others want to follow. In marketing we have to focus on becoming who we want to be before telling the world about ourselves. We must become an organizations others want to get help from.
